Understanding DEHP and Your Health - Cure Medical

On March 1, 1987, after a popular voter initiative was approved, the state of California created a comprehensive list of “Chemicals Known to Cause Cancer or Reproductive Toxicity.”

The following criteria determine whether or not a chemical is listed as harmful to humans:

  • if a chemical has been clearly shown through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles to cause cancer or reproductive harm
  • if a body considered to be authoritative by such experts has formally identified it as causing cancer or reproductive toxicity
  • if it has been labeled by a California agency or the USA federal government as causing cancer or reproductive toxicity

DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) is listed as a known chemical to cause cancer and toxicity in males.

We take cancer seriously. You should too.

DEHP was removed and banned from being used in children’s toys due to its ability to be absorbed through the mouth and skin. DEHP can cause serious health concerns for some individuals, and has even been listed as a chemical that can cause cancer.

This is especially important because the incidence of bladder cancer in people who have spinal cord injury (SCI) is 16 to 28 times higher than that in the general population.  Source

Cure Medical Does Not Make Catheters with DEHP
Cure medical catheters
Do you really want to insert products made with DEHP into your body every day? We don’t, and you don’t have to. Choose a Cure!

Several kinds of medical devices, including some catheters, still contain DEHP — and this is legal. However, if you can avoid these chemicals all together, there’s no reason not to.

Cure Medical CEO John Anderson explains, “The use of DEHP in catheters creates a number of health risks including patient exposure to hazardous chemicals which leaches from vinyl medical devices.”

“When there’s options available to create intermittent catheters that work just as well as those made with standard chemicals, there’s really just no reason to use these chemicals anymore if you can avoid it.”

“Cure Medical believes it’s the right thing to do, so we made the decision to go without DEHP in our products,” Anderson adds.
